Abstract
757,837. Friction clutches. WARNER ELECTRIC BRAKE & CLUTCH CO. June 23, 1954 [July 29, 1953], No. 18411/54. Class 80(2) Inner and outer concentric sleeves 14, 16 of a main multidisc clutch 10 between a driving gear 19 and a driven shaft 15 rotate together when a stationary magnet coil 47 is energized to engage an auxiliary friction clutch 11 between the driving outer sleeve 16 and a cam ring 31, rotatable on the driven shaft, connected to the inner sleeve through caged balls 28 in inclined grooves in the cam ring and in an axially slidable end plate 20b of the main clutch. Rotation of the cam ring 31 causes the discs of the main clutch 10 to be pressed together axially against the force of disengaging springs 41. The auxiliary friction clutch 11 comprises a driving armature 46 splined on the end of the outer sleeve 16, and driven rings 43 connected by a ring of non-magnetic material 44, such as copper, to form two pole pieces which are journalled on the sleeve 14. Many of the parts can be formed by stamping.
