Abstract

887,056. Friction clutches. WARNER ELECTRIC BRAKE & CLUTCH CO. Jan. 28, 1960 [Feb. 20, 1959], No. 3171/60. Class 80 (2). An electromagnetically engaged friction clutch has spring means separating the friction surfaces when the clutch is disengaged which give a constant separation irrespective of wear of the plates. An armature 25 is bolted to a sleeve 30 splined to a sleeve 32 adjustably secured to a driving-shaft 10 and is engageable with friction surfaces 23 carried by polepieces 15, 16 fast with the driven shaft 11, the polepieces cooperating with a stationary coil 12. The armature 25 is disengaged by a ring 40 of channel section providing axial outer, 43, and inner flanges and a radial base 44. The inner flange is interrupted and slotted to form lugs 50 resiliently gripping the sleeve 32. Fingers 42 are stamped out of the base 44 and the free ends 47 engage the bottom 52 of a recess formed in a flange 29 of the armature-supporting sleeve 30. When the coil is energized to engage the clutch the ends 47 of the fingers are forced back into line with the lugs 50 and then the ring slips over the sleeve 32. When the coil is deenergized the fingers 42 shift the armature 25 axially until the heads 53 of the bolts securing the armature to the sleeve 30 engage the base 44 of the ring and the desired separation is obtained. A snap-ring 35 received in a groove in the sleeve 32 limits the axial movement of the sleeve 30. Specification 725,587 is referred to.
