An electromagnetically engaged, spring-released clutch, or brake , comprises axially fixed driving and driven members R, 3, between which is an axially movable armature 2, connected to the driven flange 3 by a sinusoidal release spring ring 1, pre-loaded and secured by rivets at the apices of the sine curve alternately to the armature 2 and flange 3. The spring ring may consist of a number of segments and a number of these annular springs may be stacked one on top of the other and secured to one another and alternately to the flange 3 and armature 2. The armature 2 is clutched to the rotor R on energization of a stationary magnetic member M.
