Abstract
844,941. Electromagnetic clutches. ZAHNRADFABRIK FRIEDRICHSHAFEN A.G. Feb. 4, 1957 [Feb. 3, 1956], No. 3837/57. Class 80 (2). In an electromagnetic clutch an axiallyengaging positive dog clutch, operated by the same magnetic coil as an axially-engaging friction clutch, is engaged after a reduction of the air gap between the discs of the friction clutch. A magnetic member 1 having a magnetic coil 2 is keyed to a shaft 3 and has a drive-ring 4 secured thereto carrying outer clutch discs 5 cooperating with inner clutch discs 6, keyed to the splined hub 7 of a gear-wheel 8. An axiallymovable armature disc 9, also keyed to the hub 7, carries a clutch-ring 11, with dog-clutch teeth 12, slidably mounted on its periphery and prevented from relative rotation by coupling pins 17 engaging half in the disc 9 and half in the ring 11. Springs 21 and rings 20 maintain the parts 9, 11 in axial alignment with the ring 11 loaded leftwards. The final outer ring 13 of the clutch discs 5 has secured thereto a ring 14 with dog teeth for engagement with the teeth 12 on the ring 11. Energization of the electromagnet 1, 2 attracts disc 9 to engage the friction clutch 5, 6, and, as the air gap decreases, the intensity of the magnetic flux increases sufficiently to overcome the force of the springs 21 and engage the dog-teeth 12, 14 whose relative speeds have been synchronized by the friction clutch members.
