Abstract

866,588. Friction clutches. BENDIX CORPORATION. April 24, 1959 [April 25, 1958], No. 14075/59. Class 80 (2). [Also in Groups XXXIV and XXXVI] In place of the usual brush and slip-ring in an electromagnetic friction clutch for machine tools, wherein, for clutch engagement, a winding 40 fast in a driving member 11 keyed on a shaft 10 is energized to actuate, in opposition to a spring 56, an armature 45 to grip, by a presser plate 48 adjustably mounted on said armature, friction discs 28, 27 respectively splined to the driving member 11 and fingers 30 of a driven member 25 shown bolted to a gear-wheel 17, current is fed to the winding 40 through a bearing comprising a stationary outer race 65, bronze balls 66 and an inner race 60 fast on the member 11. The armature 45 is mounted for axial movement only with respect to the member 11 by dowels 58 and has a bore 47 tapered to avoid sticking. The inner race 60 is force fitted on an extension of the member 11 through an insulating plastic liner 61 and is connected to the winding 40 by a wire 70 insulated by plastic material 72. The outer race 65 is force-fitted in a stationary terminal ring 75 through an insulating liner 74 and is connected by a line 88 to an input terminal 86 mounted by an insulating block 85 on the ring 75. The bearing is sealed against dirt by a low-friction, insulating plate 77. The winding 40 is earthed through the member 11 and the shaft 10.
