Abstract
1,227,709. Friction clutches. BENDIX CORP. 5 May, 1969 [15 May, 1968], No. 22764/69. Heading F2C. An electromagnetic clutch comprises a rotating coil 10 on an input shaft 20, and two annular pole faces 14, 16, the armature 22 including two surfaces 24, 26 opposite the pole faces and resiliently interconnected, e.g. by springs 28, to bias the inner surface 24 away from its pole face 14 on disconnecting the current from coil 10. As shown, the outer surface 26 is connected to slide on pins 32 fast with an input shaft 30, shoulders 44, 46 on the surfaces 24, 26 limiting the approach of surface 24 towards its pole face 14 to maintain an air gap 34. Again, Figs. 2, 3 (not shown), the surfaces (124), (126) are splined together, and stops (25) on surface (126) limit the movement of surface (124) away from its pole face. Also, Fig. 4 (not shown), the surfaces (224), (226) are formed integral as a dished spring, the radially inner surface (224) being further axially from the pole faces. The outer surface (226) is splined (232) to the driven member 30. The outer pole face 16 is treated to be harder than the inner pole face, by flame spraying, induction hardening, or adding a surface of sintered iron or steel or an alloy thereof.
