708,557. Magnetic fluid brakes. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 30, 1951 [Oct. 31, 1950], No. 25345/51. Class 103(1) [Also in Group XXIV] A magnetic fluid brake comprises a driving member 2 spaced by an axial gap 4, containing magnetizable fluid 5, from a stationary member 3, member 2 consisting of a permanent magnet 10 with axially-extending pole pieces 9, 11 and an interposed non-magnetic ring 12 so as to create a magnetic field across the gap 4 normally coupling the members 2, 3 through the fluid 5, while member 3 houses an electromagnet 17 which, when energized, creates a magnetic field opposing and neutralizing the other field. Magnet 10 is fast on a spring-loaded sleeve 8 splined on the driving-shaft 6, the minimum gap 4 being determined by a projection 14, so that, when magnet 17 is energized, member 2 is repelled and the gap 4 is increased. At this time, the fluid 5 is drawn into grooves 24, 25 in the members 2, 3. Specification 649,553 is referred to.
