[Class 35] [Also in Group XXIV] An electromagnetic clutch comprises a driving disc 16 having a clutching surface containing a non-magnetic region 36, and a driven disc 26 of magnetic material frictionally engageable with the driving disc 16. A tubular housing 11 of magnetic material surrounds and extends closely to the perimeter of the disc 16 and encloses a winding 20 and a core 21. The latter is slightly spaced from the hub 15 of the driving disc 16. When the winding 20 is energized the magnetic flux takes a path, as indicated by the arrows, and the discs 16, 26 are drawn together. The presence of the non-magnetic region 36 causes the lines of force to cross the gap between the two discs 16, 26 more than once. Springs 23, 38 cause separation of the discs upon de-energization, the disc 26 in the de-clutched position being held against a brake member 41. The non-magnetic region 36 may consist of a brass or copper ring, and each disc may have more than one such region. In a modification the non-magnetic region is formed by a groove 60, Fig. 4. In this construction the driving disc is shown connected to a reversible direct current motor 50 having the armature connected in series with a field winding 53 each half of which is selectively connectible to a direct current source 54 through a relay system comprising a lever 55 and solenoids 56, 57.
