Abstract
525,605. Electrically-operated brakes. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. July 15, 1939, No. 20659. Convention date, July 18, 1938. [Class 103 (i)] [Also in Groups XXXV and XL] The core of an electromagnet provided with an armature attracted by both ends of the magnet and a shading ring encircling a portion of one pole is divided into two or more portions so that the flux corresponding to the portion of the pole enclosed by the shading ring is kept separate from the remainder of the flux. Figs. 5 and 6 show the application of the invention to a radio tuning-device. The laminated core of the magnet consists of two parts 7 and 8 separated by a member 9 of non-magnetic material. The separation is continued by the shading ring 4. The armature of the magnet consists of a disc 13 rotated by the setting-knob 12. When the set is in tune with the desired wavelength a current passes through the coil 3 and attracts the disc 13, thus braking the setting-mechanism. The application of the invention to a brake for a gramophone is also described. The core may be divided into three portions, the middle one of which carries the shading-ring.
