Application for addition to 430,883. [Class 35] [See also Group XXXVII] In an electromagnet as described in the parent Specification, particularly for an alternative-current contactor, the auxiliary holding winding 4 located in slots or grooves in magnet polepieces is excited by alternating current displaced in phase relatively to the current in the main operating coil 3. As shown, the auxiliary winding is fed from the main source 6 with the interposition of a series resistance 7. Alternatively, the auxiliary winding may comprise a number of coils fed by phase displaced alternating currents in which case the main coil may be put out of action when the armature 2 is in the attracted position.
