Abstract
625,128. Electromagnetic relays. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO.. Ltd., and OLLERENSHAW, C. Sept. 6, 1946, No. 26831. [Class 38(v)] Relates to arrangements such as in Fig. 1, wherein a relay 14 is enabled to release at a voltage across terminals 12, 13 only slightly less than the voltage needed to operate the relay by means of a barretter-type resistance 10 in parallel with the operating winding of the relay. The, resistance rises with increase in current and is high when the relay operates and low when it releases. For A.C. a rectifier 17 is included in circuit and a further resistance 15, and condenser 16 ensure that the relay releases rapidly should the current source be disconnected. Such an arrangement suffers from the defect that if the barretter burns out, the relay will remain operated when it should release. To remove the defect, according to the invention, a relay is used of the shunt field type, Fig. 3, the operating winding 14 of which is connected as above in parallel with the resistance 10, and the other winding 14<SP>1</SP> of which is connected in series with the resistance. In normal operation the windings co-operate to divert the flux through a magnetic shunt to operate the armature. Neither winding can by itself operate the armature so that if the barretter burns out, the relay releases. In a modification, the resistance 10 is adjustably connected across.part of the primary of a transformer the secondary of which feeds the coil 14.
