Abstract

702,542. Electromagnetic switches. STONE, & CO. (DEPTFORD), Ltd., J. Jan. 22, 1952 [Feb. 9, 1951], No. 3237/51. Class 38(5) [Also in Group XXXV] A cut-in and cut-out relay 2, for train lighting equipment wherein a generator 4, on attaining sufficient voltage, operates the relay to close contacts 8 which energize a contactor 7 which closes contacts 3 leading to the battery 5 and load 6, has a yoke with three limbs 13, 14, 15 an armature 16 rockable about the pole of the middle limb 14, and voltage and series windings 9, 11 on the limbs 13, 14. In a practical embodimenit, Fig. 2 (not shown) the armature is pivoted on a blade spring. The voltage and series windings assist each other normally, but should there be a reverse current in the series winding due to drop of voltage from the generator, the windings oppose each other and the contacts 8 open, causing in turn the opening of contacts 3. Any delay in the opening of the contacts 3 would not cause a reclosing of contacts 8 since although there might be a large reverse current from the battery through the coil 11 the flux from this would mainly traverse a lock-out magnetic circuit 14, 15 and tend to hold the contacts open. The contactor 7 may have auxiliary contacts which connect an additional resistance in the circuit of the winding 9.
