737,680. Electromagnetic relays; protective cut-out systems. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., ATHILL, W. F., and HICKS, D. G. Nov. 18, 1953 [Nov. 27, 1952], No. 30144/52. Class 38 (5). A relay 3 intended to trip a main contactor 4 having contacts 5, 6 supplying a load 2 from a high-frequency source 1 (e.g. 1600 c.p.s.) in the event of the load current exceeding a predetermined value, comprises a winding 15 of a few turns serially connected in the load circuit and mutually coupled to a winding 16 of a great number of turns, a rectifier 17 and adjustable resistance 18 being connected across the winding 16. An armature associated with the winding 16 operates a micro-switch 13 in the holding circuit of the operating coil 9 of the main contactor 4 at a current value determined by the resistance 18. The winding 16 may be part of a standard Post Office type 3000 relay and the winding 15 wound thereover, the armature being positioned within the winding 16. The contactor coil 9 is energized with D.C. through a rectifier 8 upon closure of a start button 10, the contactor being held closed upon release of the button 10 by a circuit comprising holding contacts 7 and a lamp 11.
