617,680. Motor control systems. ELECTROMAGNETS, Ltd., BOX, W. E., and CLARIDGE, J. T. Oct. 16, 1946, No. 30419/47. Divided out of 617,678, [Group II]. [Class 38 (iii)] [Also in Group II] An electromagnetic separator of the " overband " type such as described in Specification 617,678, is provided with electrical trip gear which is brought automatically into action to break the electrical circuit either temporarily or indefinitely in the event of jamming of the overband or of overloading of the driving motor. The circuit through the driving motor 9 incorporates a starter relay 24, step-by-step resistance type starting control 25, main contactor 26, overload relay control 31, jamming relay control 27 and accelerator relay control 28 of the dashpot type, all of usual construction. In the event the motor 9 stalls due to shortcircuit or overload such as may happen if a large piece of iron tends to clamp the overband between it and the electromagnets, the relay control 31 comes into operation to break the circuit through the coil of the starting relay 24, thus disconnecting the electromagnet coils 16a, 16b and also the motor 9 through their contactors 22, 23 and 26 respectively. The plant is now inoperative until the cause of overloading is removed. If complete jamming of the overband and motor should occur, the jamming relay control 27 comes into operation and cuts out both motor 9 and coils 16a, 16b, the relay also operating in conjunction with the accelerator relay 28 so that after the lapse of a predetermined time after cut out the motor and coils are again switched into circuit so that if the cause of jamming has been removed the separator functions again.
