Abstract
498,717. Electromagnetic relays. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 6, 1938, No. 440. Convention date, Jan. 7, 1937. [Class 38 (v)] In a time delay relay with two windings, the operating or release time of the relay is determined by the decay of the charging surge of current that occurs when a condenser is placed in circuit. Fig. 1 shows a form in which operation of the relay is delayed. Closure of a switch S energizes the working winding 1, 2 and also causes a surge of current to charge a condenser C through an opposition winding 4, 5. Only when the surge diminishes sufficiently, due to the condenser becoming charged, is the winding 1, 2 powerful enough to operate the relay. The contact r then moves across and the condenser is discharged through a resistance W. In an alternative arrangement, the charging surge at first overpowers the current in 1, 2 and operates the relay at once, the relay subsequently being released and again operated as above. In Fig. 2, movement of a switch S to the left causes the winding 1, 2 to operate a relay. Subsequent movement of the switch S back to its original position causes a surge of current through the winding 4, 5 to charge the condenser C. This current assists the dying away current in the winding 1, 2 and prevents the relay from releasing till after a time interval. Specification 484,458 is referred to.
