Abstract

Electromagnetic switches; contacts; switches, latching and unlatching.-In order to prevent the contacts of electromagnetic contactors from welding together when they re-engage after they have separated due to the repulsive action between them caused by abnormal currents therein while the contactor is closed, an automatic latching arrangement for the movable contact is provided which can only be released manually. As shown in Fig. 2, if the spring- pressed contact 11 is forced from the fixed contact 10 by the electrodynamic action of the current passing through the contacts, a spring- pressed detent 24 slips behind the extension 25 holding the contact 11 away from the fixed contact 10 as shown in Fig. 3. Thus the contacts cannot immediately re-engage, while they are heated by the arcing between them, on reduction of current effected by the magnetic closure, and the latching plunger has to be disengaged by pressure of the knob 28 before the circuit can again be closed.
