Abstract

176,333. Metropolitan - Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Smith, B. H.). Feb. 26, 1921, [Convention date]. Thermal switches.-A thermal relay of the cartridge type has a bimetallic member, one portion only of which is traversed by the circuit current, the other portion controlling a contact. The bimetallic member 12 comprises a wide portion 14 and a narrow portion 15. The part 14 is heated by the current and the part 15 by conduction from the part 14. The part 15 when sufficiently heated is adapted to break contact with a stationary contact 11, so de-energizing the electromagnet 4 and rupturing the circuit 2. The contact 11 is carried adjustably by the insulating case 7, which is fitted with metal ferrules 8, 9. Terminals 8<a>, 9<a> support the conducting tube 10 to which also is rigidly attached the part 14. The main circuit is then 9<a>-12-14-10-8<a>. In another type, the contact 11 is adapted to engage the member 12 when sufficiently heated. Preferably the member 12 consists of a plurality of thin bimetallic strips secured together.
