Abstract
372,667. Thermal switches. APPEL, A.and APPEL, B., (trading as LEOPOLDER & SOHN), 52, Erdbergstrasse, Vienna. Sept. 17, 1931, No. 26046. Convention date, Sept. 19, 1930. [Class 38 (v).] A thermal switch of the "heat coil" type particularly for use in the protection of telephone apparatus, has a metal casing 1 having at one end an insulating bushing 3 in which slides a copper pin 2, to which is fixed an insulating washer 4, slidable in the casing 1 and having mounted between it and the bushing 3 a compression spring 5. Fixed also on the pin 2 is an insulating washer 6 provided with a metal ring 7 adapted to contact with tongues 9 of the casing 1. A heating coil 8 is wound on the pin 2 to which one end is connected while the other end is connected to the ring 7. A cap 10 is fixed by a bayonet or similar connection on the casing 1 and has an insulating washer 11 recessed to hold a fusible plate 12, which, when the cap is in position, restrains the pin 2 against the action of the spring 5. The device is connected in circuit by means of a spring 15 whence current passes through pin 2, heating coil 8, ring 7, casing 1, to a washer 13 having a lug 14 to which a lead is attached. When the pin 2 is overheated it perforates the fusible disc 12 to make contact in the air earthing spring 16 and give an alarm. The fusible disc is replaced by removing the cap 10.
