446,787. Electromagnetic switches. WHIPP & BOURNE, Ltd., and WHIPP, F., Switchgear Works, Castleton, near Manchester. May 3, 1935, No. 13184. [Class 38 (v)] In order to prevent the heat from an " economy " resistance used in the maintaining circuit of electromagnetic switches, circuitbreakers, &c. from being conducted to the contacts, brushes, &c. and thereby reducing their efficiency, the sheath or core of the resistance unit, which is insulated from the coil or coils thereof, is mounted in thermal conductivity with the casing of the switch &c. apparatus. As shown in Figs. 1, 3, the resistance, to which current is led through insulating leads 24, is surrounded by a metal covering 20 between which and the resistance material is interposed a wrapping of insulating material 23. The resistance element is arranged to be pressed against the lid 10 of the apparatus by being supported on arms 19 pivoted to bellcranks 14 pivoted on fixed points and having their inner arms 15 pressed apart by a spring 17. Where the dissipation of heat to the casing is rapid a cowl 26 may be supported on pillars 27 whereby a current of air circulates above the casing and prevents accidental contact with the hot cover.
