Abstract
1,152,303. Transformers. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 24 Jan., 1968 [27 Jan., 1967], No. 3679/68. Heading H1T. The heat generated at the carbon brush 25 of a variable transformer is dissipated by means of a resilient metal strip 29, of high thermal conductivity, secured to the brush holder 23 and bearing against a fixed dish-shaped metal disc 11 of large surface area. The brush holder is itself held at the free end of a resilient arm 21 which is secured to a hub 19 clamped on rotatable shaft 17. Aperture 13 in the disc 11 forms one bearing for this shaft, and the disc may also constitute a slip-ring for electrical connection of the carbon brush to terminal 33 via the strip 29. The core 3 and winding 5 are, apart from the portion 27 of the winding over which the brush moves, embedded in a housing 7 of insulating material. The metal strip has a depression at 35 which prevents the brush holder contacting the windings should the brush become excessively worn. A spring 31 may help to keep the metal strip in contact with the disc.
