Abstract
1,003,325. Transformers. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Aug. 7, 1962 [Aug. 9, 1961], No. 30168/62. Heading H1T. An adjustable transformer 10 in which undesired heat is generated in the area of contact between an electrical contact surface 15 formed from successively disposed adjacent turns of a toroidal winding 13 and a brush 16 mounted for slidable movement over surface 15 has a ring-shaped heat sink 30 adjacent to the entire surface 15, the heat sink (which may be 30 or core 11) being enveloped by winding 13 and providing even cooling of surface 15. Heat sink 30 is a ring of metal having high thermal conductivity and low electrical resistance such as silver, copper, aluminium, brass, bronze or silver-plated brass. The brush holder is secured to radiator plate 18. Winding 13 is on a two-part grooved insulating former 12 on core 11 made from spirally wound ribbon or sheet. The input is to leads 24, 25 and the load 31 is connected across output terminals 26, 27. In a second embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown), the heat sink is laminated by being made from spirally wound strip or of concentric rings. In a third embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown), the heat sink has projections passing through the insulating former into contact with the core for transmission of heat to the core. If the core itself is the heat sink it slopes upwards from the centre to a flat part beneath surface 15.
