Abstract

901,327. Electromagnetic relays; thermal switches; protective cut-out systems. RINI, V. June 3, 1960 [Nov. 28, 1959], No. 19694/60. Class 38 (5). A combined starting relay and thermal cutout for an electric motor has a common insulating base formed with two compartments arranged so that one compartment, containing the thermal cut-out, receives heat from the motor whilst the second compartment containing the relay does not receive heat from the motor. As shown for a motor 35 including starting and running windings and a plug connector 31 in its casing 30 and three connector pins 32, 33, 34, the insulating base has two compartments 10, 11 and a wall 40 separating the relay compartment 10 from the motor. Three holes such as 61 in the wall 40 receive the pins 32, 33, 34 and connectors 18, 19, 25 engage the pins to complete the circuit connections to the relay coil 12, contacts 10, 16 and to the thermal cut-out comprising a bimetal 20 and heater resistor 24, both within the compartment 11 which has its open side in close proximity to the motor casing 30. The plunger type relay contact bridge 14 completes the circuit to the starter winding until the current in the coil 12 falls to its running value and the bimetal 20 disconnects contacts 22, 23 on overheating due to current in the resistor 24 or heat from the motor.
