Abstract

Switches; partly electromagnetic; contacts.-In order to overcome the tendency of switches to move to the off position by the electrodynamic forces set up when very heavy surges of current pass through the switch, current coils are arranged within the switch to have an electrodynamic action holding the contact member closed. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, the spring-mounted movable contacts c carried by the cross-piece d and serving to bridge the fixed contacts bare inconnected by two coils g in series fixed to the cross-piece and connected to the movable contacts through a flexible strap h and a conductor f. The coils carry the full current and react with the conductor f so as to press the movable contacts against the fixed contacts. In a modification, the coils are connected one in each of the leads between a terminal a and a contact b. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, the fixed and movable contacts b, c are in the form of split discs arranged at the ends of helical coils i, k connected with the terminals. The reaction between the coil tends to hold the switch in the closed position.
