Abstract
389,671. Arc-rupturing in switches. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC & MANUFACTURING CO., East Pittsburg, U.S.A.- (Assignees of Andersen, N. K. ; 236, Avenue F., Forest Hills, Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.) May 2, 1932, No. 12589. Convention date, May 6, 1931. [Class 38 (v).] The arc formed at switch contacts 10, 11 is transferred to arcing terminals 21, 23, and is then moved under the influence of a coil 33 carrying the arc current through a transfer slot 18 into a narrow slot 20 formed between two insulating members 16, 17. Here the ends of the arc are transferred to concentric arc terminals 30, 24, and the arc is rotated in the narrow slot 20 until it is extinguished. The coil 33 comprises spaced turns through which the arc-generated heat is dissipated. Spaced members 41 are provided above the transfer slot 18 through which heat is discharged. These members also have a deionizing effect and prevent the arc leaving the slot. Numerical examples of the amount of current at various voltages which may be interrupted are given in the Specification.
