Abstract

650,220. Electromagnetic relays. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. Dec. 31, 1948, No. 33613. Convention date, Jan. 7. [Class 38(v)] In a relay with two or more sets of contact springs controlled by a single armature, the coding of the relay, i.e. the determining which pairs of co-operating contacts shall " make and which "break" when the armature is operated, is varied by replacing two insulating apertured cards, one fixed and one movable with the armature and both co-operating with the ends of the contact springs, with other cards of different configuration. Each card consists of two separable parts. In the form shown there is an upper set of contact springs or wires 45 with down-turned ends carrying contacts each of which is adapted to bridge contacts on the ends of two adjacent wires of the lower set of contact springs 47, which are double the number of the upper set. The fixed insulating card, Fig. 11, comprises a lower portion 71 with lower apertures receiving the pairs of the lower set of contact wires and upper slots against which the six outer contact wires of the upper set 45 are gripped by the upper portion 75. The movable insulating card, Fig. 10, which moves with the armature 66 has a lower portion 77 with lower and upper apertures of varying size and an upper portion 78 adapted to grip the downturned ends of the six centre contact wires 45 of the upper set. The arrangement is such that when the armature is attracted downwards, it carries with it the six centre contacts 45 so that these move into engagement with the corresponding contacts of the lower set while the six outer contact pairs of the lower set are also carried down out of engagement with the six outer contacts 45 of the upper set which are held fast by the fixed insulating card. Fig. 9 shows the two sets of contact wires passing through the fixed and movable cards. The armature 66 pivots about its R.H. end and is fixed to a flat spring 69 and also to spring 85 fixed at its end 81 to the frame 56. The armature bridges the gap between front pole pieces 58 and rear pole piece 55. A casing with a window encloses the contact springs. In a modification, Figs. 1-7 (not shown), the lower portion of the fixed insulating plate has apertures for receiving the upper contact wires and selected wires are pressed down in these apertures by prongs on a fork-like member constituting the upper portion of the plate. The core is T-shaped and the operating coil readily removable therefrom. A casing encloses magnet and contacts and an insulating block has apertures containing resistors in series or parallel with the coil. Specification 626,435 is referred to.
