The contact parts 4, 6, and 5, 7, of parallel stationary and movable contact members 1, 8, respectively are forced together by electrodynamic forces when heavy currents flow between terminals 12 and 10, and the stationary contact member 1 has a U-shaped portion 16, 17, carrying the contact 5 such that the current loops 14, 18, provide magnetic blow-out forces which, when the contacts open, drive both the arcs forming between the contacts in the direction of the arrows 15, 19, i.e. towards a quenching chamber (not shown). The stationary contact member 1 is resiliently mounted by springs 2, 3, and is connected to terminal 12 by a U-shaped flexible current lead 11, 13. The movable contact member 8 is connected to terminal 10 through a flexible lead 9. An external blow-out field (not shown) ensures that the arcs are driven into the quenching chamber.
