Abstract
1,196,796. Arc extinguishing in electromagnetic switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 6 Nov., 1967 [7 Nov., 1966], No. 50247/67. Heading H1N. Two fixed contacts 14, 15 arranged to be bridged by a moving contact 30, are supplied through conductors 23, 24 which lie parallel to a line joining the fixed contacts and which are connected to the fixed contacts as shown so that the current flows in the same direction in the two conductors 23, 24 and in the opposite direction in an arc joining the two fixed contacts so that such an arc is driven away from the conductors on to arc runners 18, 19. The moving contact is U-shaped, the base of the U lying parallel to the conductors 23, 24 and on the opposite side thereof to the contacts 14, 15 so that upon overload the moving contact is driven to the open position by the electrodynamic repulsion. The contact 30 is coupled through an overcentre mechanism to a pivoted handle which is used to reset or open the contacts manually. The contacts are located in an insulating arc-chute whose inner walls are composed of an acetal resin material such as polyoxymethylene. In an alternative arrangement (Fig. 7, not shown) a straight bridging contact is used and the electrodynamic repulsion then serves to hold the contacts firmly closed.
