Abstract
1,094,380. Automatic circuit breakers. SQUARE D CO. June 1, 1965 [June 16, 1964], No. 18703/67. Divided out of 1,094,377. Heading H2B. An automatic circuit breaker has a two-part moulded insulating casing; two terminals 30, 32 mounted at opposite ends of the casing, one 30 being connected to a fixed contact 42 by a strap 46; a movable contact arm 43 pivotally mounted in the casing at 83 and extending longitudinally of the casing; a releasably latchable lever (96) (Fig. 4, not shown); a rotatable trip bar 39 located between the pivot 83 and terminal 32 and rotatable to release to lever (96) and so to open the contacts 42, 44; a conducting strap 126 connected to terminal 32 and extending longitudinally of the casing to a point beyond the pivot 83 where it is attached to a current responsive bi-metal 128 the other end of which is free to engage and rotate the trip bar 39 upon sustained overload and a flexible conductor 130 connecting the free end of the bi-metal to the contact arm 43. The position of bi-metal 128 and therefore the tripping current is adjustable by a screw 136. The circuit breaker is also provided with an electromagnetic tripping device for short-circuit protection (see Specification 1,094,378), an overcentre snap-acting toggle linkage coupling the contact arm 43 to a handle 24 (see Specification 1,094,377) and an arc chute and venting arrangement (see Specification 1,094,379). As described the circuit breaker is for three-phase working.
