Abstract
627,552. Electromagnetic relays; control of motors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. July 30, 1945, No. 19401. Convention date, Aug. 5, 1944. [Classes 38(iii) and 38(v)] An electromagnetic protective relay for a three-phase motor comprises two coils 1, 2 arranged substantially at right angles with one another, a pivoted armature 7, and contacts 11 operated by the armature. The coils are connected in two of the supply lines to the motor and it is stated in the Specification that the armature normally occupies a central position, the rotary forces due to the two coils neutralizing each other. In the event of failure of either of the two lines having the coils, one of the coils will be de-energized, and an insulating extension 9 of the armature will separate the contacts 11, thereby opening the main circuit-breaker 15. Should a failure occur in the line not having a relay coil, the current in one of the remaining phases will be reversed so that the resultant flux will, it is stated, be substantially at right angles with the centre line of the cylinder 4, thereby causing contacts 11 to be opened. The armature may be restored to its normal position by hand or by a spring, after which the motor is restarted by pressing button 17.
