700,258. Control of A.C. motors. SIEMENS SOC. VER AZIONI. Sept. 18, 1951. No. 21930/51. Class 38(3) A split phase induction motor is started by closure of a switch 1 to pass a heavy current through the motor main winding 3 and through a winding-section 4 of an electromagnetic relay I. Contacts 7, 8, are thereby closed to energize the motor starting winding 6 until (under normal operating conditions) the motor current reaches its running value and the armature 5 drops. If the motor fails to start, however, a bimetallic strip 9 of relay II becomes effective to close contacts 10, 11, so energizing another winding-section 12 of the relay I. Since the fluxes due to the winding- sections 4, 12, are in opposition and are substantially equal, the armature 5 drops to disconnect the motor winding 6. An overload relay III may be provided.
