Abstract
734,233. Control of A.C. motors. S.A.M.I. C.E.N. SOC. AZIONARIA MANTOVANA IMPRESE COSTRUZIONI E NAVIGAZIONE. May 11, 1953 [May 10, 1952], No. 13013/53. Class 38 (3). In a system of star-delta control for a threephase motor, actuation of a push-button 1 closes a line contactor T1 which has a selfmaintaining contact 5. A star-connection switch T3 also closes for starting the motor, whereupon the switch 1 is released so that switch 2 closes automatically. A relay S1, which is responsive to the motor current, opens contacts 10 to disconnect the switch T3 and to close the delta-connection switch T2. The closure of the delta switch is maintained through contacts 11 of a relay S2 which has one operating coil energized in accordance with the motor current and an auxiliary coil energized with intermittent current, so that, if the motor current falls below a predetermined value and remains below it, the contacts 11 are opened during one of the periodic interruptions of the energization of the auxiliary winding of the relay S2. The opening of the contacts 11 de-energizes the delta-switch T2 and energizes the switch T3 so that the motor returns to the star-connection. After the opening of a time-delay contact 13R the motor connections may again be changed from star to delta. The intermittent current for energizing the auxiliary coil of the relay S2 is derived from a transformer Tr through a mercury switch M1 periodically operated by a bimetallic strip B. A mercury switch M2 operates when the bimetallic strip reaches its maximum deflection to disconnect the heater R for the strip which thus alternates between two extreme positions. The transformer Tr is disconnected .when the star switch T3 is closed. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the relay for shifting the motor windings from delta to star connection is of the electromagnetic type in which the magnetic circuit is closed by a movable armature. The parts coming into contact are polished so as to present a gap as small as possible, thus preventing chattering.
