Abstract

515,341. Protective cut-out arrangements. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and BOURNE, S. N. June 21, 1938, No. 18449. [Class 38 (v)] A protective system for a two- or three-phase motor comprises the provision of voltage relays for determining whether the conditions are suitable for connecting the motor to the line, and preventing connection unless all phases of the line are energized, and series coil relays for disconnecting the motor if one phase becomes opencircuited while the motor is running. The invention is applicable to motors which are started automatically by means of tappet, float, or compressor switches. The supply L<1> ... L<3> is adapted to be connected to the motor terminals A ... C by a contactor 1, the closing coil K of which is energized, on closure of switch P, only if all the star connected voltage - relay coils D ... F are energized and their contacts d ... f thereby closed. Relay coils L ... N in the lines thereupon close their contacts l ... n and are adapted to maintain them closed with the minimum (magnetizing) line-current. If a line is opencircuited, the corresponding contact l, or m, or n opens and introduces into the circuit of coil K a heater H which, after a time-delay, opens the contact of a relay G and de-energizes the coil F. Contact f thereupon opens and de-energizes the coil K, so opening the contactor 1. The contacts of relay G are adapted to be latched open and reset manually or by a remote-controlled coil.
