Abstract

200,431. Igranic Electric Co., Ltd., (Cutler-Hammer Manufacturing Co.). Oct. 30, 1922. Systems for alternating-current only. - Synchronous motors are started on reduced voltage and are automatically switched over to full voltage by a device subject to a voltage which is a function of the speed of the motor. In the arrangement shown, a synchronous motor A having a field winding F is started by closing a push button switch 11, which through a relay 8 effects the closure of a starting switch 1 connecting the motor to compensator windings 2, 3. The alternating current initially induced in the field F produces sufficient voltage across the terminals of an impedance coil L to open two relays 6, 7. The relay 6 is calibrated to close when the motor reaches an intermediate speed, thereby effecting the closure of a running switch 4 and the opening of the starting switch. The relay 7 is calibrated to close at or near synchronous speed, so as to connect the field to a battery B and cut out the impedance coil L.
