430,883. Electromagnets. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. Nov. 20, 1934, No. 33399. Convention date, Nov. 22, 1933. [Class 35] [See also Group XXXVII] For holding the armature 4 of an electromagnet 1 such as an electromagnetic contactor in the attracted position, one or more auxiliary windings 4 located in slots or grooves on the magnet polepieces are excited by continuous current. The invention is applicable to magnets in which the main coil 3 is supplied with alternating or continuous current and arrangements may be provided whereby in the attracted position of the armature the holding coil 4 is excited and the main coil is disconnected. In order to prevent the production of alternating E.M.F's in the holding winding, when the main coil is energized with alternating current, two coils such as 4 may be provided both located on the upper fixed pole or one on the lower pole and connected in series in such a way that while their magnetomotive forces are additive the alternating E.M.F's induced in the two coils oppose each other. The holding winding may be fed from the main alternating current source through a dry rectifier.
