Abstract

474,668. Electromagnets. RYDER, C., BRAITHWAITE, R. C., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. April 1, 1936, No. 9684. [Class 35] [Also in Group XXXVII] In an electromagnetic relay, preferably of the quick-acting impedance type, each or either of the armatures is formed with a portion of ordinary magnetic material which is shrouded on the face nearer the co-operating electromagnet by a portion of high permeability metal or alloy such as Mumetal (Registered Trade Mark). As shown in the Figure applied to an impedance relay with a voltage electromagnet 6 and current electromagnet 5, the armature of the former comprises a plate 4 of ordinary magnetic material to which is secured on the face adjacent to the fixed core a plate 8 of Mumetal or other high permeability material, insulating material 9 being, if desired, interposed between the plates. The fixed core 6 may also, if desired, be made to include a portion of such high permeability material. By this construction it is stated that the calibration of the impedance relay can be maintained over a wide range and under varying conditions and the effects of hysteresis minimized. When connected in a line circuit operating with variable power-factor the voltage winding or the voltage and current windings may be fed through a rectifier or a system of rectifiers, thus rendering the relation between the forces exerted by the magnets on their armatures substantially independent of power-factor and also preventing chattering of the armatures.
