Abstract

Electromagnets.-Electromagnetic relays for railway signalling systems using alternating current are rendered inoperative to stray direct currents by providing them with a divided magnetic structure the parts of which are embraced by closed-circuit conductors or windings so arranged that with direct current the armature normally lies cpposite points of equal magnetic potential and is unaffected, but with alternating current the equipotential line is displaced and the armature is operated. In the form shown, a core made up of flat laminµ has a central portion 1 carrying the magnetizing winding 2 and two divided portions 3, 4 carrying copper bands. A closed ring magnetic armature surrounds the coil and takes bearings in the frame; it is normally held in the position shown by an adjustable balance weight 27. The structure is bolted within a housing 19.
