Abstract

Electromagnets.-To prevent chattering and to eliminate residual magnetism in an alternating- current electromagnet, a shading coil is provided on the magnet core or on the armature, and a short section of non-magnetic material is provided near the face of the core, or of the armature, or of both members. Fig. 1 shows a pot magnet in which the armature 3 carries a shading coil 8 in a slotted recess 9 and is divided into long and short portions by non-magnetic material 6. The fixed pole-piece 4 may be divided by a non-magnetic layer 10. In another form, Fig. 3, the non-magnetic portion 19 is provided on the armature 17, and the shading coil 24 is on the core 15; a non-magnetic piece 22 may be provided on the core. Fig. 4 shows a form of armature in which the non-magnetic layer is arranged in another manner.
