Abstract
272,872. Associated Telephone & Telegraph Co., (Assignees of Pye, C.). June 21, 1926, [Convention date]. Contact-making relays.-The core 1 has a polarizing winding 6 and an actuating winding 5 and the flux from the former is provided with an alternative low-reluctance path through member 7, 4, in addition to the path through the left-hand end of the core 1. When the polarizing winding 6 alone is energized, most of the flux passes through members 7, 4 and retains the armature 3 in the position shown. Energization of the winding 6 in the opposite direction will produce no effect, but energization in the same direction will produce a flux in the member 4 opposing that already there, with the result that the flux across the gap 12 is increased and the armature 3 is actuated. The effect of the winding 6 will now be to retain the armature 3 attracted, since the reluctance of the path 7, 4 has been greatly increased, so that the relay will remain operated when winding 5 is de-energized or energized in the reverse direction. This feature makes the relay specially applicable for actuation by alternating currents. The relay may also be arranged to break the circuit of the polarizing winding when the armature is operated.
