542,045. Electromagnets. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Aug. 28, 1940, No. 13555. Convention date, Aug. 28, 1939. [Class 35] [Also in Group XXXVII] The core of an electromagnet is made of three portions placed side by side and separated by layers of non-magnetic material, the middle portion being of U- or L-shape and forming one pole and carrying the winding and the other pole being formed by the two outer portions which may be provided with pivots to carry the armature. Figs. 1 and 3 show a core of which the middle part 10 is formed of V-shaped laminations with a coil arm carried on their upper limb 10c. Only one of the two side groups is shown in Fig. 3 and each consists of L-shaped laminations 11 clamped to the portions 10a, 10b of the middle part of the core and separated therefrom by non- magnetic insulating material 13. The limbs 11 b of the side laminations 11 are prolonged beyond the lower limbs 10a of the middle portion 10 and are rotated at 22 to form a pivot for the armature 18 which is spring-restored against a strip 26 and carries a contact 24. The limb 10c of the central portion may carry a damping winding 28 and the three parts of the core may each be made of a single unlaminated piece. In an alternative form the lower limb 10a of the central portions 10 may be omitted.
