Abstract

750,835. Non-contact-making relays. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Feb. 4, 1954 [Feb. 7, 1953], No. 3323/54. Class 40 (4). A bi-stable magnetic device has a composite core of which one portion 4 which carries a coil 3 has a substantially rectangular hysteresis loop, while the remaining portions 2 have a cross-section sufficient to provide a low reluctance and a high electrical resistance which reduces the core loss. Suitable materials for the portions 4 and 2 respectively are stated to be anisotropic nickel-iron and ferroxcube. The composite core may be arranged as shown in Fig. 2 or may comprise an annular ring 5 of nickel-iron which carries a coil 6, Fig. 5, and is arranged in close contact with a low-reluctance open ring 2 of ferroxcube. A number of bistable core portions 4 may have a common lowreluctance path 2 consisting of an open sleeve of ferroxcube as shown in Fig. 6.
