Abstract

7490. Conrad, F. April 3, 1905, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. Electro-magnets. -To prevent chattering of the armature of an electro-magnet excited by alternating current, the magnetic flux is divided up into several portions by the use of metal bands around the pole-pieces or by excitation of a portion of the divided poles by current from the main source but retarded in phase. The laminated core structure 1 is magnetized by the winding 3 from the alternating-current source 4 so as to attract the armature 2. Surrounding portions of the pole-pieces 7, 8 are loops or coils 9 of conducting-material in which currents are induced, serving to delay the flux from the portions surrounded by the loops behind the flux from the remaining portions of the pole-pieces. The coils 9 may be connected in series. In a modification, the poles are divided, the portions 5, 6 being provided with windings 17 which are connected to the source through phaseretarding devices.
