In an armaturereaction excited D.C. generator, the primary axis is excited by field coils 1, whilst the secondary armaturereaction excited axis is energized by polyphase armature currents of suitable phase flowing between tapping-points on the armature winding and an external circuit. In the form shown, the polyphase tappings on the armature winding 2 are connected through slip-rings 6, 7, 8 to condensers 9, 10, 11 which induce resonance currents in the armature winding, thus creating a secondary axis flux in quadrature with the primary flux produced by the exciting field coils 1. The load current from the brushes 4, 5 is passed through compensating windings in the usual way. In a modification, the effective value of the condensers may be varied by means of a variable-ratio transformer. The resonance may be modified by making the circuit slightly capacitative so that the leading current pro. duced assists the primary excitation. In a further modified form, the exciting winding 1 is dispensed with and the armature is supplied with polyphase current through condensers by an alternator on the same shaft, either directly through slip-rings or, if it is desired to use a reduced size of alternator, by energizing the armature winding by an inductively-coupled winding fed by connections along the rotor shaft to the alternator.
