Abstract

719,267. Alternators. SELECTRA, Ltd. June 27, 1952 [March 30, 1951], No. 16292/52. Divided out of and Addition to 719,212. Class 35 An alternator is compound excited in dependence on the voltage and current output, and has a separate rectifier circuit for deriving a current for initiating excitation from the residual magnetism. As shown in its simplest single-phase form, the main rectifier F is fed from the secondary winding E2 of a current transformer E in the output line C and an additional voltage generating winding G coaxial with the main generating winding A. The field winding D, which is also connected to the generating windings, is fed from the rectifier F through a controlling rheostat and a solenoid H1 of a relay H controlling the auxiliary excitation circuit. Excitation is initiated at starting by the connection of a second rectifier J through a current limiting resistor K across the main and additional windings A, G by the relay H. As the field current builds up, the relay opens its contacts to put the initiating rectifier out of circuit. A three-phase modification is also described in which the main rectifier is fed from current and voltage transformers from the output lines while the initating rectifier is fed across two lines only, the additional winding being dispensed with.
