Abstract
1,178,733. Magnets. THOMSON C.S.F. 9 Feb., 1967 [18 Feb., 1966], No. 6259/67. Heading H1P. The magnetic flux density in an air gap between the polepieces of a permanent magnet is controlled by an electromagnet having a core bridging the air gap and insulated from the polepieces by non-magnetic layers and an excitation winding carrying the controlling current. As shown, Fig. 1, a U-shaped permanent magnet is provided with polepieces 2, 3 which define an air gap 4. An electromagnet 5 has the ends of its core separated from the polepieces 2, 3 by non-magnetic sheets 9, e.g. of " Duralumin " (Registered Trade Mark), and the coil 6 of the electromagnet is energized by a variable current. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the U-shaped permanent magnet is replaced by a pair of bar magnets extending parallel to one another and being provided with polepieces at their ends remote from the electromagnet to define a second air gap in which a constant magnetic field intensity is produced.
