Abstract
658,355. Transformers and inductances. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. April 27, 1949, No. 11210. Convention date, May 6, 1948. [Class 38 (ii)] To obtain a magnetic core operating with a constant permeability the ferromagnetic core is made in two sections 2, 3 each having a closed magnetic circuit and providing parallel magnetic paths, with a common exciting winding 7 linking both sections and means, such as a D.C. winding 4, for magnetizing one section with a unidirectional flux, of density in the vicinity of that providing maximum permeability, such that the algebraic sum of the flux densities in the respective sections, which would be operating above and below the density providing maximum permeability, gives a constant B/H slope and hence permeability with variation of the exciting current in winding 7. When the winding 7 is excited with A.C. a further common biassing winding 8 may link both sections and be energized with D.C. of value to give a magnetizing force to each section of value half that required for maximum permeability, the magnitude of the alternating current, between positive and negative maximum values, being not more than that corresponding to the magnetizing force necessary to give maximum permeability, and hence avoid reversal of magnetization. A suitable material is 50/50 iron-cobalt alloy with the winding 4 providing a M.M.F. of two oersteds.
