Abstract
774,508. Transformers and inductors. SMITH, E. H. FROST-. Aug. 1, 1952 (Aug. 2, 1951; Feb. 29, 1952], Nos. 18345/51 and 5414/52. Class 38 (2). A saturable magnetic core comprises a plurality of laminations 10 of ferromagnetic material of low permeability which has an hysteresis loop which does not exhibit a sharp knee and a plurality of laminations 15 of a high permeability which has a hysteresis loop which exhibits a sharp knee, the high permeability laminations 15 being assembled in abutting relationship with the low permeability laminations 10, the.joints between the laminations 10, 15 of the two types of material in a given layer being staggered in relation to each other from one lamination to the next. The core may be formed from E- and I-shaped laminations, the high permeability I-shaped laminations being inserted in every other lamination layer, or the low permeability lamination may be rectangular in shape with the high permeability extending across the centre of the window in the low permeability lamination. The saturation point of the core may be predetermined by selecting the ratio between the cross-sectional areas of the high and low permeability portions. In yet another form of the core certain of the lamination layers may be constructed wholly from magnetic material of high permeability.
