436,911. Inductances. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and SMITH, C. G., c/o General Electric Co., Wembley, Middlesex. June 25, 1934, No. 18721. [Class 37] A variable inductance, for example a tuning inductance for a wireless receiver, comprises a plurality of coils and a magnetic core which are relatively movable so that an increase of coupling between any pair of coils is accompanied by an increase in the effective permeability of the medium. In the construction shown, two solenoids 1, 2 of different diameters are connected in series and are adapted to slide over one another and also over a core 3 of finely divided magnetic material. This is effected by mechanism which may be so arranged that the solenoids 1, 2 approach the core 3 symmetrically, or the solenoid 2 may first slide over the core 3, these two elements then sliding together into the solenoid 1, which is fixed.
