Abstract
609,708. Inductances. POLYDOROFF, W. J. May 25, 1944, No. 10174. Convention date, May 22, 1942. [Class 38 (ii)] A variable inductance for increasing the tuning range at high frequencies, comprises a movable ferro-magnetic core 2 coaxial with a coil divided into a number of sections connected in parallel. For frequencies of the order of 100 megacycles, only a very small value of inductance is needed, and a suitable inductor would normally have few widely-spaced turns giving a small tuning range. To obviate this, a coil 3 is divided into two parts connected in parallel so that many more turns may be employed. In another modification, the coil comprises four sections. In all cases the sections are connected in aiding relation, have equal inductance and are arranged symmetrically. Core 2 is of powdered magnetic material such as magnetite or of iron alloyed with silicon or antimony. Fig. 6 shows a coil with a ribbon type of winding 3 divided into two sections, the core 2 being formed of a number of discs with air spaces for cooling. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a similar inductance in which the turns are formed by cutting slots in a single conducting strip. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
