Abstract
551,848. Electromagnets. BRITISH THOMSON HOUSTON CO., Ltd. May 27, 1942, No. 7194. Convention date, May 27, 1941. [Class 33] [Also in Group XXXVII] An overload relay which operates with an inverse-time characteristic for moderate overloads and instantaneously for big overloads has an energizing winding 14 of thermo-magnetic material which_ loses its permeability with rise of temperature caused by the flow of current. Thus, when cold the winding serves to shunt magnetic fiux-which would otherwise pass through the armature 12, but as the temperature rises more flux passes through the armature which is eventually attracted. The core tip 21 is preferably made hollow so that it becomes saturated more readily. The winding 14 may have a coating 14b,of copper.
