473,168. Synchronous dynamo-electric machines. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 19, 1936, No. 34954. Convention date, Dec. 19, 1935. [Class 35] The continuous-current excited secondary member of a synchronous machine has a number of pole units thereon each consisting of a pair of polepieces united by a yoke with separate exciting windings on the polepieces so energized that each polepiece can act as a pole or half a pole, an auxiliary winding on the unit also being energized when the whole unit functions as a single pole. In the form shown, each pole unit comprises polepieces 12, 13 with windings 15, 16 secured to a magnetic block 14 secured by keys 18 to the yoke 11, from which it is separated by shims 19, the block 14 being surrounded by a winding 17. The connections of the windings are as in Fig. 1, the switches being shown in position for 2n pole operation with the winding 17 de-energized. For n pole operation, the supply to half the polepieces is reversed by throwing switch 23 to the lower position and the windings 15, 16 are assisted by windings 17 which are energized by closing switch 24. The salient pole member cooperates with a primary member 21 having pole-changing windings.
